The Hunger Hero
Who is The Hunger Hero? 🥞

The Hunger Hero is a dog-friendly local café that sells food to the public, while also providing free meals to those in need, particularly children and disadvantaged groups, and it's located in Cleator Moor, Cumbria. Along with offering free breakfasts and lunchboxes, the café runs a "pay it forward" scheme, encouraging community support. The goal is to tackle food poverty while fostering community spirit, ensuring no one in the area goes hungry, while also making some quality grub to takeaway or sit in.

The café approached me to create brochures as part of their marketing strategy, specifically aimed at attracting workers from the nearby industrial estate. I managed the entire process, from designing the brochures to overseeing their printing, ensuring the final product aligned with their community-driven ethos while appealing to potential new customers.

For The Hunger Hero brochure, my goal was to design a piece that balanced both their commercial and charitable missions. The café serves the community, not only by selling food but also by tackling food poverty through free meals and a "pay it forward" initiative. To reflect this, I wanted the brochure to speak to the café's warmth, approachability, and community spirit, while also making it appealing to local businesses, particularly workers from the nearby industrial estate. This mix would help broaden their customer base and encourage local support.

Additionally, the design had to be practical and easily digestible, ensuring that the messaging was clear to potential new customers. I also considered the need for consistency in branding, using the café’s visual identity to create a cohesive look that aligned with their core values of inclusion and support.

The design captures a homegrown, community-oriented vibe with its intentionally imperfect, overlapping lines and the use of a handwritten-style font. The simplicity of the overall design reinforces a welcoming, approachable feel, reflecting the grassroots and personal nature of The Hunger Hero’s mission. This aesthetic creates a sense of authenticity, aligning with the café’s emphasis on local support and its heartfelt connection to the community. The visual choices communicate warmth, making the brand feel more personal and relatable.

By targeting workers from the industrial estate, I aimed to expand their customer base while reinforcing the café’s role as a welcoming space where customers and community can come together. This approach reflects The Hunger Hero’s mission of blending commercial success with social responsibility.
